Provenance

Where it came from

Braingeyser was originally released as a rare card in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to represent a powerful blue sorcery spell. The artwork for the Summer Magic edition, known as the Edgar set, features the iconic illustration by Mark Poole, who sought to capture the surreal, overwhelming influx of knowledge and magical energy that the card’s mechanics describe. The Summer Magic set itself emerged from a chaotic production period in 1994, intended as a corrected version of the Revised edition, though it was largely recalled due to widespread printing errors.

Because of the botched print run and the limited number of copies that escaped destruction, the Summer Magic Braingeyser has become a legendary curiosity among collectors. Its visual design retains the classic, minimalist aesthetic of early Magic cards, characterized by the clean, stark layout of the 1990s. While the card was initially received as a staple for deck-building due to its ability to manipulate hand size, the Summer version is now valued primarily for its scarcity and its role as a tangible artifact of the game's precarious early history.
