Ruric Thar, the Unbowed

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, originally debuted in the 2013 set Dragon's Maze as a central figure in the Gruul Clans of Ravnica. This specific iteration hails from the 2022 Double Masters set, which sought to curate and reprint high-impact cards from Magic: The Gathering’s history to facilitate powerful draft environments and bolster collector portfolios. The design reflects the brutal nature of the Gruul guild, utilizing a high-cost, high-reward mechanic that punishes opponents for casting non-creature spells, forcing them to engage in the creature-focused combat that defines the guild’s philosophy.

The artwork for this variant was created by Slawomir Maniak, who rendered the twin-headed giant with a focus on its dual personality and primal aggression. Maniak’s work on this piece was praised for its dynamic lighting and the clear depiction of the character’s volatile, mountain-dwelling nature. Within the community, the card is recognized as a quintessential 'punisher' effect, serving as a staple in commander formats where its ability to tax non-creature strategies remains relevant and competitively feared.
