Breath of Darigaaz

Breath of Darigaaz was originally released in the 2000 Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents a powerful red sorcery spell themed around Darigaaz, the Igniter, one of the iconic Primeval Dragons featured in the set's narrative. The design reflects the game's shift toward high-impact, board-clearing effects that reward players for committing to specific color identities during the Invasion block.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the visual language of the Invasion cycle. His work on this piece emphasizes the destructive, sweeping nature of the dragon's breath, aiming to capture the scale of the game's draconic antagonists. As part of 'The List'—a rotating pool of reprints included in modern Set Boosters—the card has been reintroduced to contemporary players, serving as both a functional tool in casual formats and a nostalgic nod to early 2000s gameplay mechanics.
