Where it came from
Bribe Taker was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set in 2022. The card was designed for the 'Obscura Operation' deck, which centers on the mechanics of blue, white, and black mana. This set drew heavy inspiration from 1920s film noir and Art Deco aesthetics, reimagining the typical fantasy tropes of Magic: The Gathering within a gritty, urbanized cityscape controlled by competing crime families.
The card’s illustration, rendered by artist Jason Rainville, captures the corrupt, atmospheric essence of the Obscura family. The design focuses on the transactional nature of the set's theme, rewarding players for manipulating the game state. Upon release, it was well-received by players looking for utility creatures that scale with their opponents' board presence, fitting seamlessly into the political and strategic gameplay common in the Commander format.
