Where it came from
Brutal Cathar // Moonrage Brute was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card reflects the set's central design mechanic, double-faced cards, which represent the transformation of characters under the influence of the plane's perpetual moonlight. It was created to provide a versatile, reactive creature for white decks, serving as a tactical piece of removal that evolves into a more aggressive threat when the game state shifts toward night.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who emphasized the stark visual transition between the human guardian and the lycanthropic terror. The design was praised by the player community for its efficiency and ability to swing board states in limited and constructed formats. It remains a staple representative of the gothic horror aesthetic that defines the Innistrad plane, balancing the thematic duality of the setting with functional, high-utility gameplay.
