Where it came from
Brutal Cathar // Moonrage Brute was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card reflects the set’s thematic focus on the gothic horror tradition of the Innistrad plane, specifically highlighting the cycle of lycanthropy. Designed as a double-faced card, it mechanically represents the transformation from a human knight into a werewolf, capturing the set's core gameplay loop of day and night cycles.
The illustrative work for this specific promo version was crafted to emphasize the dramatic contrast between the character's vigilant duty as a Cathar and their inevitable, feral transformation. The art direction aimed to blend high-fantasy armor motifs with the gritty, shadowed aesthetic characteristic of the Innistrad block. Upon release, the card was well-received by the player base for its versatility in combat and its thematic resonance with the set's werewolf-centric mechanics.
