Where it came from
Brutal Cathar was released as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Art Series in 2021, a collection designed to highlight the illustrative talent behind the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards feature enlarged, borderless versions of the original artwork on the front, with the artist's signature embossed in gold foil, providing a premium display piece for fans of the game's gothic horror aesthetic.
The original illustration for this card was created by artist Daarken, known for their moody and dynamic depictions of fantasy creatures. In this design, the artist focused on the transformation and tactical nature of the cathar as it hunts through the darkness of Innistrad. The piece was well-received by the player community for capturing the thematic tension of the set, emphasizing the high-contrast lighting and atmospheric gloom that defines the plane's visual identity.
