Lore

Why it matters

This common card from the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set features the surveil mechanic, which allows players to refine their deck by looking at the top card and deciding whether to keep it or move it to the graveyard. Its utility as a low-cost way to manipulate the library and fill the graveyard makes it a staple for those building decks that rely on graveyard synergy.

Provenance

Where it came from

Consider was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a mechanically efficient blue cantrip, offering players the ability to surveil before drawing a card, which solidified its role as a staple in various constructed formats including Modern and Pioneer. Its inclusion in this gothic horror-themed set reflects the set's focus on graveyard interactions and resource selection.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss. Known for his atmospheric and emotionally resonant style, Voss crafted an image that captures the quintessential aesthetic of Innistrad. The design focuses on the tension of a moment of decision, leaning into the set's themes of dread and contemplation, and it was well-received by the player base for both its visual appeal and its significant utility in high-level competitive play.
