Where it came from
Sarkhan Vol first appeared in the Magic: The Gathering Shards of Alara set in 2008 as a planeswalker card, representing a dragon-obsessed shaman from the plane of Tarkir. This specific version was released as part of a Secret Lair drop, a premium product line introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 that offers stylized, limited-run reprints of existing cards. These drops typically feature unique art treatments intended to appeal to collectors and fans of specific artistic aesthetics within the fantasy genre.
The art for this iteration was crafted to emphasize Sarkhan's volatile nature and his deep connection to dragonkind, utilizing the distinct visual vocabulary established for the Secret Lair series. By collaborating with diverse artists who often operate outside the traditional card game illustration style, Wizards of the Coast aimed to provide a fresh visual perspective on iconic characters. This approach has been well-received by the player base, who frequently seek these cards as centerpiece additions for their decks to showcase personal style and appreciation for the game's evolving artistic history.
