Where it came from
The Relentless Rats Secret Lair Drop was released by Wizards of the Coast as part of the specialized, limited-run series that allows the company to reprint iconic cards with unique, thematic artistic treatments. This specific drop features five distinct illustrations by Graham Yarrington, each depicting a rat in a different dark, gritty style that plays into the creature's mechanical identity, where the card's strength grows exponentially based on how many copies are controlled by the player.
The design intent behind this set was to embrace the cult-like following surrounding Relentless Rats, a card that uniquely rewards players for building decks consisting almost entirely of identical copies. The reception within the Magic: The Gathering community was notably enthusiastic, as the card has long been a favorite for casual and commander players who enjoy the unconventional strategy of overwhelming an opponent with a swarm of vermin, and the bespoke art provided a premium way to execute that strategy.
