Where it came from
Cabaretti Ascendancy was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and noir cinema, casting the five factions of New Capenna as powerful crime syndicates vying for control of a metropolis powered by a magical substance called Halo. This enchantment represents the Cabaretti, a hedonistic cult-like family of druids and revelers who operate the city's most exclusive clubs and social scenes.
The card was illustrated by Wisnutanaset, who leaned into the faction's thematic focus on unity and celebration. The artwork depicts the festive, chaotic energy of a Cabaretti gathering, utilizing the set's signature gilded, opulent visual style to emphasize the family's status as the city's social elite. Mechanically, the card was designed to reward players for leaning into the creature-heavy, cooperative playstyle synonymous with the red, green, and white colors of the Cabaretti family.
