Where it came from
Seasoned Buttoneer was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as a science-fiction-themed 'Un-set,' which features silver-bordered or uniquely marked cards that explore mechanics outside the game's traditional ruleset. The card introduces the 'sticker' mechanic, a core innovation of the Unfinity set that allows players to physically place adhesive labels on cards to modify their names, art, or abilities during gameplay.
The art for the card, rendered by illustrator Bryan Sola, depicts a charismatic character bedecked in a variety of pins and badges, leaning into the whimsical aesthetic of a carnival-themed galaxy. The design reflects the lighthearted tone of the set, which aims to balance humorous self-referential mechanics with vibrant, polished illustrations. Upon release, the set was noted for its experimental approach to Magic’s permanent physical components, and the card itself serves as a functional piece within the specific draft environment of the Unfinity set.
