Provenance

Where it came from

Corpsehatch was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed as the conclusion to the Zendikar block, the set introduced the Eldrazi, a race of cosmic, world-consuming entities inspired by Lovecraftian horror. Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the set's themes of sacrifice and token generation, allowing players to destroy a creature to produce Eldrazi Spawn tokens, which could then be used for additional mana or defensive utility.

The artwork for Corpsehatch was illustrated by Dan Scott, who sought to capture the grotesque and alien nature of the Eldrazi influence upon the natural world. The illustration depicts the visceral process of a creature being corrupted and transformed by Eldrazi mana. Upon its release, the card was noted for its utility in limited formats, where its ability to function as both removal and acceleration made it a staple for players navigating the high-mana landscape of the Rise of the Eldrazi draft environment.
