Where it came from
The Cat Beast token was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens are functional game pieces used to represent temporary creatures created by specific card effects during gameplay, such as the ability found on the card 'Jetmir, Nexus of Revels'. The set was designed around an Art Deco, crime-noir aesthetic inspired by the roaring twenties, blending magical fantasy elements with the stylized atmosphere of a metropolis controlled by angelic and demonic families.
The illustration for the Cat Beast token was commissioned to capture the distinct visual language of New Capenna, focusing on the stylized, urban, and high-fashion nature of the plane. Artists contributing to this set were tasked with integrating creature designs into this Art Deco framework, emphasizing geometric patterns and luxurious, imposing forms. As a utility item, the token was well-received by players for its thematic consistency with the set's broader artistic direction, providing a cohesive visual experience that matched the unique, gritty glamour of the New Capenna environment.
