Where it came from
Cataclysm was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to round out the Rath Cycle, a storyline centered on the artificial plane of Rath and its impending merger with Dominaria. As a rare card, it was mechanically engineered to be a powerful board-clearing effect, intended to balance the gameplay environment by resetting the battlefield state when a player had fallen behind.
The card’s iconic illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, whose atmospheric, dark aesthetic became a staple of late-nineties Magic design.
