What it does

Each player chooses from among the permanents they control an artifact, a creature, an enchantment, and a land, then sacrifices the rest.

The Weatherlight dragged the Predator behind it, the cradle hauling the casket.

Provenance

Where it came from

Cataclysm was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion, the third and final set of the Rath Cycle for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was refining the game's mechanical complexity, the card was designed as a powerful board-reset spell intended to force players to make difficult strategic sacrifices, effectively stripping the battlefield down to its bare essentials.

The artwork was provided by Jim Nelson, who captured the card's theme of total destruction through a visceral, high-contrast illustration that became iconic within the set. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its competitive potential in tournament play, particularly for its ability to dismantle established board states, and it remains a hallmark of high-impact sorcery design from the late nineties.
