Mage il-Vec was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion, the final set in the Rath Cycle of the Magic: The Gathering card game. The set is notable for introducing the shadow mechanic, a keyword that restricted creatures to interacting only with others sharing the same ability, effectively creating a separate dimension of combat. The design team, led by Mark Rosewater, intended for shadow to reflect the grim, atmospheric nature of the artificial plane of Rath.

The card was illustrated by Daren Bader, who contributed several pieces to the set during a prolific period for the game's aesthetic development. Bader's work on this card leans into the high-fantasy, gritty aesthetic prevalent in late nineties Magic, depicting the il-Vec as a shadow-dwelling figure consistent with the lore of the Vedalken-adjacent race.
