Caves of Koilos

Caves of Koilos is a legendary land card in Magic: The Gathering that originally debuted in the 1995 set Ice Age. The card represents a strategic nexus of white and black mana, reflecting the harsh, subterranean geography of the Dominarian landscape. As a 'pain land,' it has remained a staple in various formats for decades due to its ability to provide flexible mana at the cost of the player's life, embodying the classic trade-off between power and survival in the game's design philosophy.

The Dominaria United Promo version, numbered 244p, was released in 2022 as part of a commemorative promotion celebrating the return of the game's original plane. The artwork features a distinct aesthetic update, often utilizing the game's modern frame treatments to appeal to both long-time collectors and new players. These promotional variants are typically distributed through Wizards of the Coast's organized play programs, designed to reward participant engagement with updated visuals while maintaining the core mechanical identity established nearly thirty years ago.
