Caves of Koilos first appeared in the Apocalypse set for Magic: The Gathering in 2001, representing the desolate, mana-drenched landscapes of the plane of Dominaria. The card was designed as a 'pain land,' a functional cycle that provides players with flexibility by allowing them to tap for either colorless mana or one of two specific colored mana at the cost of one life.
