Caves of Koilos

Caves of Koilos is a legendary land card in Magic: The Gathering that first appeared in the 1995 set Ice Age, designed to represent the desolate, mana-draining underground tunnels of Dominaria. Its inclusion in the Dominaria United Promos, specifically with the collector number 244s, served as a functional reprint that reintroduced the classic 'pain land' mechanic to modern gameplay. This iteration maintains the strategic balance of allowing players to tap for colorless mana or pay one life for white or black mana, a core utility that has remained a staple in competitive decks for decades.

The artwork for this particular promotional printing reflects the updated aesthetic standards of the 2022 release, focusing on the dark, cavernous atmosphere of the location. These promotional versions are often sought after by collectors for their unique set stamps and treatment, which distinguish them from the standard set printings. While the card's original design was intended to offer tactical flexibility at a literal cost to the player's life total, its enduring presence across various sets highlights its successful integration into the game's evolving mechanics and lore.
