Where it came from
Chain Lightning was originally released in the 1994 Legends expansion, serving as a staple of red aggressive decks due to its efficient damage-to-mana ratio. The Secret Lair version, designated as collector number 2047, was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line of curated card reprints featuring unique, thematic artistic treatments that diverge from the standard aesthetic of the core game.
The design for this specific iteration features art by a guest illustrator tasked with reimagining the classic spell through a modern, stylized lens. These Secret Lair drops are often sought by collectors for their limited availability windows and distinctive visual departures, which contrast with the original 1990s high-fantasy illustrations, reflecting a broader effort by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate individual artistic expression within the hobby.
