Food

The 'Food' drop was released in 2021 as part of the Secret Lair series, a specialized line of Magic: The Gathering cards featuring unique, high-concept artwork unavailable in standard booster sets. This specific drop highlights cards mechanically centered on the Food artifact token mechanic, which allows players to gain life. It emerged from Wizards of the Coast's strategy to engage collectors and veteran players by commissioning distinct, thematic artistic treatments that diverge from the game's traditional fantasy aesthetic.

The illustrations for this drop were created by multiple artists, including Ovidio Cartagena and others, who employed a vibrant, stylized aesthetic reminiscent of culinary art or gourmet recipe cards. This design choice was intended to contrast playfully with the darker, high-fantasy visuals usually found in the game. Upon release, the set was well-received by the player base for its whimsical art direction and its practical inclusion of cards that were competitively relevant within the Food-themed deck archetypes of the time.
