Provenance

Where it came from

Chain Lightning originated as a common card in the 1994 Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed as a flavor-rich, high-risk burn spell that echoed the chaos of the set's elemental themes. Its inclusion in the Amonkhet Invocations series, released in 2017, reimagined the card with a striking, high-concept aesthetic meant to mirror the opulent, god-focused mythology of the plane of Amonkhet.

The Invocations were illustrated with a unique, hieroglyphic-inspired visual language that prioritized ornate borders and stark, atmospheric portraiture. While the series was polarizing among the player base due to the complex font choice and unconventional frame design, it remains a sought-after piece of high-fantasy art, serving as a prestige printing that elevates a classic competitive staple into a collectible artifact.
