Provenance

Where it came from

Capsize was originally printed in the 1997 Tempest set, but the version here originates from the Amonkhet Invocations, a series of premium, Masterpiece-style cards released in 2017. These cards were designed to represent the flavor and aesthetic of the plane of Amonkhet, characterized by an ornate, hieroglyphic-inspired frame that sets them apart from standard Magic: The Gathering releases. This specific card was reimagined by artist Cliff Childs, who utilized a distinct visual style intended to evoke the gilded, sun-drenched monuments of the Amonkhet setting.

The Invocations as a whole were met with a polarizing reception within the player community. While the artwork and thematic cohesion were lauded for their high artistic ambition, many players found the unique, stylized font and frame design difficult to read during gameplay. Despite these functional critiques, the cards remain sought after by collectors for their striking aesthetic departures and their status as a limited-run component of the Amonkhet expansion block.
