What it does
Whenever another Zombie you control enters, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.
He rose from the graf for every cobbler, tanner, and fool who'd been slaughtered in the parish—and they rose and shambled after him.

Where it came from
Champion of the Perished was originally released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. This specific version is part of the Secret Lair series, a collection of limited-edition, specialized reprints featuring unique, stylized artwork that deviates from the standard game aesthetic. The card serves as a tribal payoff for Zombie decks, growing in power as more undead creatures enter the battlefield, mirroring the lore of Innistrad where the restless dead are a persistent, escalating threat.
The artwork for this Secret Lair edition reflects the distinct gothic horror visual identity of the Innistrad plane while incorporating the experimental artistic direction favored by the Secret Lair line. These releases are designed to appeal to collectors and players who appreciate alternative aesthetics, often utilizing guest artists or thematic visual palettes. The card has been well-regarded within the community for its mechanical efficiency and its thematic resonance with one of Magic's most iconic horror settings.
