Where it came from
Charging Bandits was released in 1997 as part of the Portal expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed as an introductory product for new players, featuring simplified rules and mechanics that removed the complexity of instant-speed spells and stack-based interactions to lower the barrier to entry for the game.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, a prolific illustrator for the game during its early years. Her depiction of the bandits aligns with the set's aesthetic, which moved away from traditional high-fantasy tropes toward a more distinct, vibrant style. While the Portal set received mixed reactions from long-term competitive players due to its streamlined gameplay, it remains a notable chapter in the history of Magic for its attempt to broaden the game's demographic.
