Mountain

The Mountain card from the 1997 Portal set was produced by Wizards of the Coast as part of an introductory product line designed to teach new players the fundamentals of Magic: The Gathering. Unlike the core sets of the era, Portal utilized simplified rules and a distinct aesthetic intended to lower the barrier to entry for novice gamers. The set transitioned away from the complex card interactions and expansive vocabulary that characterized the main game, offering a streamlined experience that prioritized accessibility.

The art for this specific Mountain was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational figure in the early history of Magic: The Gathering. His approach focused on high-contrast, iconic imagery that helped define the visual language of the game's basic lands. While the Portal set as a whole received mixed reviews from long-time competitive players due to its simplified mechanics and lack of tournament legality at the time, the basic lands remain appreciated by collectors for their clean, minimalist frame and the nostalgic quality of Rush's signature artistic style.
