Where it came from
Chatter of the Squirrel was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set marked a thematic shift for the game, moving toward a graveyard-centric narrative that explored the aftermath of the Phyrexian Invasion. Mechanically, the card introduced the flashback ability, allowing players to cast the spell a second time from their graveyard, which was a defining innovation for the Odyssey block's focus on resource recycling.
The card was illustrated by Scott M. Fischer, a prolific artist known for his vibrant and textured fantasy work throughout the early 2000s. His design captures the whimsical yet frantic nature of the squirrel creature type, a classic piece of Magic lore that often serves as a lighthearted counterpoint to the game's more somber dark fantasy elements. Upon release, the card became a staple in casual token-generating decks and solidified the squirrel as a recognized, albeit quirky, tribe within the game's ecosystem.
