Soltari Foot Soldier

The Soltari Foot Soldier was originally released in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering Battle Royale box set, a product designed to introduce players to the game through pre-constructed decks themed around the color pie. The card itself utilizes the shadow mechanic, first introduced in the Tempest expansion, which restricts interaction to creatures that also possess the ability. This specific iteration serves as a lower-cost representative of the Soltari, a race of shadow-dwelling warriors from the plane of Rath.

The art was rendered by Kev Walker, a prolific illustrator whose distinctive, gritty style became a hallmark of late 1990s Magic sets. Walker focused on conveying the ethereal and incorporeal nature of the Soltari, utilizing sharp lines and cool color palettes to contrast with the more traditional humanoid warriors of the time. Upon release, the Battle Royale collection was well-received by players looking for a streamlined way to engage in casual constructed play, and the Soltari Foot Soldier remains a nostalgic touchstone for those active during that period of the game's history.
