Cinder Marsh

Cinder Marsh was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'pain land' that taps for either red or black mana, it was designed to provide color fixing for aggressive decks, albeit at the cost of one life. This set marked a significant era in the game's history, as it was the first installment of the Rath Cycle and is widely regarded for its influential mechanical design and cohesive flavor, which emphasized the brutal, industrial landscape of the plane of Rath.

The artwork was commissioned from John Matson, who captured the desolate, volcanic aesthetic central to the Marsh's identity. Matson utilized a dark, atmospheric palette to convey the inhospitable nature of the environment, a stylistic choice that aligned with the set's grittier creative direction.
