Provenance

Where it came from

The Soltari Emissary was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents a member of the Soltari, a race of shadow-dwellers from the plane of Rath who exist partially in the spirit world. The card was designed to showcase the new shadow mechanic, a key gameplay feature of the Tempest block that allowed creatures with the ability to bypass traditional blockers, reflecting the ethereal nature of the Rathian inhabitants.

The artwork for the card was provided by Melissa Benson, an artist who contributed extensively to the early years of the game. Her illustration depicts the Emissary with a distinct, translucent aesthetic that conveys the shifting reality of the shadow realm. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its efficient mana cost and its ability to act as a resilient evasive attacker in white-aligned decks of the era.
