Where it came from
Magnetic Web was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for introducing mechanics like buyback and shadow, aiming to add layers of strategic complexity to the game’s environment. As an artifact card, Magnetic Web reflects the thematic focus of Tempest on intricate mechanical interactions and battlefield control.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Greg Staples. His design sought to capture a sense of ominous, tethered power, aligning with the card's functional purpose of redirecting attacks toward a specific creature. Upon its release, the card was viewed as a niche utility piece, often analyzed by players for its potential in defensive strategies, though it remained a secondary inclusion in most competitive deck lists of the era.
