Where it came from
Circular Logic was originally released in the Torment expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2002. It was designed as an efficient counterspell that leveraged the game's graveyard mechanics, specifically the madness keyword, which allowed players to cast the spell for a lower mana cost if it was discarded. The card quickly became a staple in tournament play, particularly in aggressive decks that could reliably discard cards to trigger its secondary effect.
The version from the Ultimate Masters set, released in 2018, features updated card frame technology while retaining the original, iconic illustration by Greg Staples. Staples, a prolific artist for the game, opted for a haunting, surreal visual style that complements the card's function of countering spells through mental interference. Within the Ultimate Masters set, which was curated as a retrospective of powerful cards from the game's history, Circular Logic was included to provide players with a high-utility control option.
