Provenance

Where it came from

City of Brass was originally commissioned for the Arabian Nights expansion in 1993, intended to evoke the legendary aesthetic of the Middle Eastern folklore that defined Magic: The Gathering’s first themed set. Illustrated by Amy Weber, the card features a vibrant, surrealist depiction of a golden metropolis rising from a desert landscape, a design that leaned heavily into the mystical and architectural exoticism prevalent in early fantasy trading card art.

By the time it appeared in the 1997 Fifth Edition release, the card had become a cornerstone of the game's mechanics, prized for its unique utility in providing any color of mana at the cost of one life. While its inclusion in the core set marked a period of transition for the game's aesthetic, the artwork remained true to Weber's original vision, helping the card maintain its status as a quintessential piece of Magic history during the game's rapid international expansion.
