Where it came from
City of Brass was originally introduced in the 1994 Arabian Nights expansion as the first land card capable of producing any color of mana at the cost of one life. The design reflects the high-risk, high-reward philosophy of early Magic: The Gathering, where powerful utility was balanced against immediate mechanical drawbacks. It quickly became a staple in competitive play, serving as a foundational mana-fixing tool for multi-color decks throughout the game's history.
The 2022 Double Masters version, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, reimagines the card with a modern artistic aesthetic that emphasizes the architectural grandeur of the titular city. By updating the visual presentation for a premium release, Wizards of the Coast sought to celebrate the legacy of this iconic card while maintaining its functional prominence. The design retains the classic mechanical identity that has made City of Brass a perennial favorite among players for nearly three decades.
