Where it came from
The Civic Saber was introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card pool in the Double Masters 2022 expansion. As a set designed specifically to provide high-value reprints and a curated limited environment for established players, the inclusion of artifacts like the Saber focused on enhancing aggressive, equipment-based strategies during drafts. It was originally crafted to serve as a versatile piece of utility equipment, providing a simple yet effective power boost that scales based on the number of creatures a player controls.
The card’s illustration was provided by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into high-fantasy weaponry and dynamic metallic textures. The design intent behind the Civic Saber was to create a 'common' rarity staple that could function as a reliable inclusion in multicolored decks, emphasizing board presence over complexity. Upon its release in the 2022 set, the card was received as a functional, utilitarian tool for the limited format, appreciated for its straightforward mechanics and its ability to swing the momentum of board states in the mid-to-late game.
