Where it came from
The Civic Wayfinder was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the inaugural expansion for the Ravnica block in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed to emphasize the block's focus on multicolored cards and guild mechanics, this card was created as a reliable utility creature for green-aligned decks. Its ability to search for land cards captures the flavor of the vast, interconnected city-planet of Ravnica, where navigation and resource management are essential for survival.
The illustration was crafted by artist Matt Cavotta, who utilized a distinct, warm palette to depict the Wayfinder as an essential guide within the urban sprawl. Cavotta’s work during this period was highly regarded for its ability to balance the gritty, architectural nature of the Ravnica setting with the organic elements of creature design. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency, eventually becoming a staple in various formats for its functional role in smoothing out mana bases.
