Provenance

Where it came from

Channel was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Beta, the second core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed during a period when the game's creators were still balancing the power dynamics of early spells. The card's ability to convert life points into mana at a one-to-one ratio was intended as a high-risk, high-reward mechanic that epitomized the game's early philosophy of explosive, fast-paced play.

The artwork for Channel was created by Richard Thomas, one of the game's original contributing artists. His illustration features an ethereal, flowing figure channeling magical energy, which visually echoed the card's function of bridging the player's life force with mana resources. Over time, the card became infamous within the competitive community for enabling 'combo' decks that could win the game in a single turn, leading to its eventual restriction and banning in most established tournament formats.
