Ground Seal

Ground Seal was introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Magic 2013 core set, released in July 2012. Designed as a green enchantment, its mechanical purpose is to disrupt graveyard-reliant strategies by preventing players from targeting cards in graveyards while simultaneously replacing itself with a fresh card draw. This design reflects the game's long-standing effort to provide players with tools to interact with the graveyard, a zone that had become increasingly powerful in competitive formats at the time.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the seal as a mystical, earthy barrier pulsating with nature-based magic. Kieryluk’s work for the set leaned into the core set’s aesthetic of traditional fantasy imagery, emphasizing the tactile, grounding nature of the spell. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective sideboard option, valued by players looking for a compact way to neutralize opponent graveyard interaction without sacrificing card advantage.
