Where it came from
The Mountain card from the Mercadian Masques set was released by Wizards of the Coast in October 1999 as part of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the second expansion of the Masquerade block, set on the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its mercantile culture and goblin-run society. This particular iteration of the basic land was designed to immerse players in the unique, cavernous architecture and industrial aesthetic characteristic of the Mercadian cityscape.
The artwork for this specific Mountain was created by the artist Rob Alexander, a staple illustrator for the game during its formative years. Alexander utilized a distinct, painterly approach to emphasize the rugged, metallic textures of the plane, moving away from the more traditional fantasy landscapes seen in earlier sets. The card was well-received by the player base for its thematic consistency, contributing to the distinct visual identity that defined the Mercadian Masques era.
