Where it came from
Tempted by the Oriq was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages promotional set in 2021. The card centers on the narrative of the Oriq, a shadowy, subversive organization operating within the university setting of Strixhaven, which seeks to harness forbidden magic to topple the institution. It was designed to reflect the guild's manipulative nature, mechanics-wise, by allowing players to steal nonland permanents from their opponents.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character work. Her design emphasizes the sinister, conspiratorial tone of the Oriq agents, using dramatic lighting and shadow to portray the act of psychological or magical subversion. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set, effectively translating the lore-heavy antagonist group into a functional and thematic gameplay element.
