Where it came from
The Construct token (number 21) was released as part of the Commander 2018 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These tokens were produced to accompany specific decks within the release, serving as physical representations of creatures created by various cards' abilities during gameplay. The set was designed to expand the Commander format, focusing on thematic mechanics that often involve generating permanent artifact creatures.
The illustration for this token reflects the aesthetic language of the Esper shard and the wider lore of artifact-heavy planes in the Magic multiverse. Artists for Wizards of the Coast are typically commissioned to create these pieces to fit the stylistic tone of the accompanying expansion, prioritizing mechanical clarity while maintaining the intricate, mechanical visual identity associated with construct-type creatures. The token was received as a functional necessity for players utilizing decks centered on artifact synergy.
