Where it came from
The Construct token (collector number 17) was released as part of the Modern Horizons set by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. Modern Horizons was a unique expansion designed specifically for the Modern format, drawing heavily on Magic: The Gathering's deep history by introducing new cards that referenced mechanics and creature types from across the game's decades-long lifespan. This token was created to support various cards in the set that generate colorless Construct creature tokens, most notably the card 'Urza, Lord High Artificer'.
The art for this Construct was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, a veteran artist for the game known for his clean, digital style. The design leans into a sleek, mechanical aesthetic, depicting a humanoid automaton that fits the artifact-heavy theme of the set. Upon its release, the token was well-received by players for its clear iconography and the way it visually unified the artifact-synergy decks that dominated the Modern format during that period.
