Provenance

Where it came from

The Construct token was released as part of the 2022 expansion set The Brothers' War for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, this set revisited the lore of the franchise's foundational conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra. The token was designed to represent the mechanical automatons frequently summoned by various artifact-themed cards within the set, serving as a functional piece to help players track battlefield state.

The visual design of the Construct, illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, leans heavily into the industrial and rusted aesthetic that defines the retro-futuristic setting of the Brothers' War era. Tan’s depiction captures the heavy, modular silhouette of an artifact creature built from scraps, emphasizing the scarcity and harsh engineering characteristic of the story's war-torn landscape. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and its clear, utilitarian utility during gameplay.
