Where it came from
The Conundrum Sphinx was released in 2010 as part of the Magic 2011 core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the card was designed to function within the set's focus on powerful, iconic creatures that evoke the long-standing fantasy traditions of the game. It reflects a period in Magic's history where design teams aimed to provide players with mid-range threats that rewarded strategic deck manipulation and card advantage.
The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Igor Kieryluk. Tasked with depicting a creature defined by mystery and intellectual challenge, Kieryluk utilized a style that emphasizes the ethereal and imposing nature of the sphinx. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for blue-aligned decks, noted for its ability to cycle through a player's library while presenting a persistent aerial threat, becoming a recognizable part of the 2011 expansion's mechanical identity.
