Where it came from
The Conundrum Sphinx was released in 2018 as part of the Nature of the Beast Commander deck, a set designed to expand the multiplayer format for Magic: The Gathering. As a blue creature card, it was crafted to provide card advantage and strategic manipulation through its ability to reveal the top card of the library and force opponents to guess its mana value. This design aligns with the broader identity of blue decks in Magic, which emphasize foresight and information control.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. Kieryluk’s work on the Sphinx captures the creature’s enigmatic and ethereal quality, utilizing a palette that emphasizes the mysterious nature of the card's mechanics. Within the Commander 2018 set, the piece served as a thematic centerpiece for decks focused on library manipulation, and it remains a staple for players who value interactive, puzzle-oriented gameplay.
