Where it came from
The Inkling token was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were designed to represent the summoned familiars associated with the Prismari college, which emphasizes a blend of elemental magic and artistic expression. The design reflects the aesthetic of the set, featuring fluid, magical manifestations of living ink that embody the campus's theme of academic sorcery.
The visual language of the token was crafted to contrast with the rigid structure of traditional summon cards, opting instead for a swirling, ethereal composition. By using the iconography of spilled ink that comes to life, the illustrators leaned into the lore of Strixhaven's bibliomancy. Upon its debut, the token was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion and the distinctive art style that separated it from the standard creature tokens found in previous sets.
