Plains

The Plains card numbered 229 from the 2010 Rise of the Eldrazi expansion serves as one of the basic land illustrations for a set defined by its cataclysmic, otherworldly theme. Released as the conclusion to the Zendikar block, the set focused on the emergence of the Eldrazi—ancient, cosmic entities that began consuming the plane. This specific Plains artwork captures the stark, dramatic landscape characteristic of the plane of Zendikar, emphasizing the desolate beauty of the world before it is fully ravaged by the titans.

The illustration was created by artist Veronique Meunier, who contributed several pieces to the Magic: The Gathering franchise during this era. Her design choice leans into a sweeping, wide-angle perspective that grounds the player in the geography of the set. The work is noted for its evocative use of light and expansive horizon, serving to reinforce the environmental storytelling that was central to the Rise of the Eldrazi design philosophy, which aimed to make the setting feel like a living, breathing character in the game narrative.
