Wizened Arbiter

Wizened Arbiter was released as part of the 2019 Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique experimental set distributed at MagicFest events. These cards were designed to mimic the aesthetic of internal Wizards of the Coast playtest materials, using a stark, minimalist black-and-white frame that eschews the traditional polish of official Magic: The Gathering card releases. The card serves as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the game's development process, specifically highlighting the 'weird' or unconventional mechanical designs that are often tested internally but rarely see a standard commercial printing.

The design of the Mystery Booster playtest series was intended to capture the raw, unrefined energy of prototype development, featuring placeholder art and simplified card frames to keep the focus entirely on the game mechanics. As a result, Wizened Arbiter exists outside of the standard game canon, functioning as a collectible artifact of the game's design culture rather than a sanctioned tournament card. It was well-received by the community for its transparency into the iterative nature of card design and its playful subversion of the typical Magic visual identity.
