Where it came from
The Interplanar Brushwagg was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set distributed at various Magic: The Gathering conventions. These cards were designed to evoke the spirit of early design explorations, serving as internal prototypes that were never intended for standard competitive play. The card features a white playtest-style frame, deliberately minimalist in aesthetic to focus on mechanical experimentation.
The design of the card leans into the whimsical, recursive nature of the Brushwagg creature type, which has existed as a cult favorite within Magic lore since the Mirage expansion. By granting the card an ability to phase out and return to the battlefield with a bonus, the designers aimed to capture the strange, unpredictable essence of interdimensional travel. It was received by the community as a nostalgic nod to the game's more experimental roots, valued primarily by collectors interested in the evolution of card mechanics.
