Where it came from
Costume Shop is a card from the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion Unfinity, the fourth in a series of silver-bordered 'un-sets' designed for lighthearted, casual play. Released by Wizards of the Coast, this set was themed around an interstellar carnival, allowing the design team to experiment with mechanics that broke the standard rules of the game. The card features art by Olena Richards, who utilized a whimsical, vibrant aesthetic to capture the chaotic energy of a space-faring storefront where creatures can swap their identities.
The design of Costume Shop reflects the set's focus on interactivity and humor, specifically utilizing the 'sticker' mechanic introduced in Unfinity to modify creatures' names or abilities. Upon its debut, the set was received as a novel departure from the competitive nature of traditional Magic, appreciated by players who enjoy unconventional card designs. While the mechanics were unique to this specific release, the card serves as a thematic cornerstone for the set's overarching narrative of a bizarre, cosmic amusement park.
